The actress said she left the room because she believed her mother could only die peacefully if she “let her go.” Although she desperately wanted to hear words like “I’m proud of you,” “I love you,” or “I’m sorry,” she accepted that those words would never come. Dorothy passed away, and Stone said she knew that taking time to step away had provided her mom with the peace she deserved when she left this world. Later, she would share that, during her time in hospice, her mother treated her like a caregiver rather than a daughter, revealing childhood traumas when they were alone together. Instead, she tried to make her mother feel stronger by giving her everything she thought she needed, but later realized it may have done more harm than good. The actress said she sometimes “overhelped” relatives, inadvertently leaving them feeling so dependent that they were “frustrated” and “angry all the time. She also created a comfortable, hospital-like environment for her father’s final days in the guest house. Even so, their relationship was never quite harmonious, and the words she hoped would come never did.
